A Century of Helium in Diving: From Military Trials to Modern Exploration

2024 marked 100 years since the first use of helium in diving, a breakthrough by the US Navy in 1924 to combat nitrogen narcosis. Over the decades, helium-based breathing gases, such as heliox and trimix, have become essential in technical, scientific, commercial, and military diving, enabling deep exploration beyond 305m (1,000 ft). The use of helium in saturation diving, wreck exploration, and scientific research has expanded, with divers now leveraging closed-circuit rebreathers and hydreliox mixtures for extreme depths.
