The EU's 14th sanctions package, effective from 26th September, includes a ban on Russian helium imports, a strategic move to curb future reliance on Russia as Gazprom plans to become the world's third-largest helium producer by 2025. Although Russia has ramped up production from Amur, its helium will likely find buyers in non-sanctioning countries like China and India. The sanctions will reshape global helium trade flows but are expected to have a limited short-term impact on overall supply. The year to date to Jun’24 data for Europe shows 38mmcf of helium delivered from Russia, amounting to 5% of the total YTD helium imported into Europe.
