Scientists at the University of Texas at Austin are leading a project to replicate the natural process of serpentinisation, aiming to produce hydrogen from iron-rich rocks. This initiative, supported by a US$1.7mm grant from the US Department of Energy’s ARPA-E, seeks to accelerate hydrogen production using novel catalysts. Successful laboratory tests have shown promise, with potential implications for global hydrogen production.
